At the beginning of 2011, I decided to make a song and a video every week for a year. Welcome to Tam Johnstone's Song Explosion. The motivation behind this project was to become a better songwriter and to learn how to make videos. Everything was made in my little flat above Silky's bar in Dearborn, Michigan where I lived from 2009-2013. (Occasionally, if I had to do a particularly loud vocal, I would do it in my car.) Some of the videos were shot around the Detroit area and lots of stock footage was used when I didn't have time to make something from scratch. Bear in mind, during this time I was also playing drums in a band called, Fifty Amp Fuse several times a week. Total madness, really.

I feel most of the tracks stand up but, let's be honest: the videos aren't that great. However, I learned a tremendous amount from working on them and that was the whole point. 13 of the 52 songs became my 2012 album, Fantastic Animals which was put together purely to help with my O1-Visa reapplication (is this the first album to be released for such a purpose?) Shout out to all my Michigan friends who made me feel so welcome and heartfelt thanks also to those of you who lent a hand with a few of the videos. At the time of writing (February 2025), I've been revisiting the project with a view to remixing and eventually releasing all 52 tracks.
